Differences between Northern Renaissance Art and Italian Renaissance Art Essay

?There are many differences between Northern renaissance art and Italian renaissance art. They are quite different. While Italian renaissance art tended to show the body in an idealistic way, Northern renaissance art hid the body. The art was very realistic, but drapery hid the body in a medieval fashion. That makes one major difference between the two: Italian was classical and Northern was medieval. Northern art had an immense amount of symbols in it. A good example of Northern art is the Merode Altarpiece, painted by Robert Campin in 1425-1428. In this piece, there is an incredible amount of symbolism, it is painted in a medieval style (drapery hides the body, etc. ), there’s a tremendous amount of detail put into it, and perhaps one of the most defining features of it is that it has got the patron in it. Since it was commissioned by someone besides the church, they wanted to be put in the piece of art that they paid to be painted. The patrons of the altarpiece appear on the far left side, as if they were part of the scene itself. Now we have Italian renaissance art. Some defining characteristics of it are that it is very classical (drapery tends to cling to the body, revealing the perfection of all the idealized bodies), they used plenty of linear perspective (whereas Northern art was more medieval, so they didn’t much care for that), they liked using illusions in their work, and they didn’t have patrons in their work because the church usually commissioned all the art. Botticelli’s Birth of Venus is a good example of Italian renaissance art. It not only has tons of drapery clinging to the female’s bodies, but it also has a nude person, common in classical art. This piece shows no particular patron, and so we can assume that it was commissioned by the church. One work of art commissioned by a patron is the Merode Altarpiece. Since this is a triptych, it has three panels. The patrons, that are identifiable as bourgeoisie from nearby Mechelen, appear in the left panel (the female donor and the servant in that panel appear to have been added later by a different painter once it was completed). Since the patrons wanted to be in it, it had to be modified from the original. A peculiar example of patrons being in a work of Italian renaissance art is the Adoration of the Magi, painted by Sandro Botticelli in 1476, and commissioned by the Medici family. The Medici family was a pretty huge deal back then. Therefore, if they wanted to be in a painting, they would be in a painting. Botticelli painted many members of this high-class family in this work of Italian renaissance art. Yet another example of patrons in a work of art is Hugo van der Goes’s Portinari Altarpiece, painted in 1475. It is another triptych, so it is divided in three. The difference between this one and the earlier one is that instead of having the patrons on just one side, they are on both sides of the piece, as if they were watching it. It is very medieval. The patrons in this seem to almost be a part of what is happening, but they don’t seem connected.

It is not only about preserving environment but also it focuses on managing natural, social, & produced capital in a prudent manner & it is not recession to to pre-modern lifestyles as understood by many people which is a mis-conception.It is basically resolving conflict between various competing goals & involves simultaneous pursuit of eco-prosperity, environmental quality & social equity. We need to use natural resources at the rate at which they can be replenished within a proper time period, there is a need to change from old centered ways of doing businesses to new approaches that involve cross-sectoral coordination & integration of environmental & social concerns into all development processes. Also there is a need to provide delivery of competitively priced goods & services that satisfy human needs & bring quality of life while progressively reducing ecological impact. Proper legitimate & protected rights are also required to enable effective practice of personal responsibility & development of mechanisms to protect environment. Obstacles to sustainable development – Natural capital may not be substitutable, consumption may be irreversible (e.g. Ecosystem services) & multifunctionality of many natural resources which are difficult to replenish once the systems are degraded highly. What has been done & what can be done now- Today in world, large investments are going on in projects involving renewable resources e.g. – India Renewable Energy Development Agency(IREDA) will be investing US $ 3.39 billion dollars for development of renewable energy sector projects during 11th 5 year plan, Govt. has also formulated National policy on bio fuels. Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Gujarat government for setting up 5 solar parks. Similar initiatives are also going on in various nations but along with this there is a need for a Sustainable Business Model which not involves mass consumption & mass disposal models, which focuses on developing technologies to improve environmental conservation features of products, facilitate application of such features, as well as technology for innovative manufacturing processes that require less energy & this type of business model is required in every nation whether it is developed or developing but developed nations should work in this regards first as they have enough resource & capital to develop such technologies. Many small initiatives can be proved very helpful in sustainable development if implied in a nation – Buy fresh food rather than processed food(low carbon), develop retail stores in which solar roof tops are there, managing livestock operations in a prudent manner & reducing energy consumption there, developing & promoting products which can be recycled easily & developing software’s which can be updated easily etc. Many such initiatives can help a lot in sustainable development but a proper Sustainable Business Model is need of today for every organisation(profit or non-profit) in every nation.

A carbon tax can reduce carbon emissions of organisations and individuals and promote the development of renewable energy sources. If a carbon tax is imposed, then the government will have more capital that can be spent on improving infrastructure that is based on renewable energy sources and more meaningful behaviour. Although there are numerous benefits of the imposition of a carbon tax, it would also result in increasing new burdens for organisations, governments, consumers and the overall economy. According to Andrew, Kaidonis and Andrew (2010, p. 613), the cost of imposition and collection of carbon tax would increase overall expenses of the government which will negatively affect the nation’s economy. For example, it is easy for countries such as Sweden and Norway to implement carbon tax policies effectively. However, it is difficult to implement in countries such as China and India that contributes 30 percent and 7 percent carbon emissions worldwide respectively (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2017, n.p). The government would face difficulty in effectively imposing and collecting carbon tax in these countries because of high population and low control of the government. If a harmonised carbon tax is not imposed globally, then it cannot be used for addressing the issue of climate change. However, a harmonised carbon tax would generate income globally that could be used by governments for addressing the global issue of climate change. As of 2017, the number of countries that implement a carbon tax policy has reached 40 which include large nations such as the United Kingdom and Australia (Roberts, 2017, n.p). In order to meet Paris climate goals, nations such as India, Brazil and Thailand will also implement policies for implementing carbon tax which would assist in reducing carbon emissions globally (Roberts, 2017, n.p). In conclusion, there are many difficulties in implementing a carbon tax policy such as high administration costs, increase in expenses of companies, lack of harmonised tax system, and high dependence on fossil fuel. However, a carbon tax policy can reduce global carbon emissions and increase the investment in renewable energy sources which assist in addressing the issue of climate change. Thus, a carbon tax policy is the best solution for climate change. Look, I have work and school today, but I'll go do your research for you tomorrow. In the meantime you can try to make friends with them.† â€Å"I don't want to make friends with them.† Lily looked at the hounds, one of whom Sophie was pounding on with her little fists as she laughed gleefully, then looked back at Charlie. â€Å"Yes, you do.† â€Å"Yeah, I guess I do,† Charlie said. â€Å"Have you ever seen a dog that size before?† â€Å"There are no dogs that size.† â€Å"What do you call those, then?† â€Å"Those aren't dogs, Asher, those are hellhounds.† â€Å"How do you know that?† â€Å"I know that because before I started learning about herbs and reductions and stuff, I spent my free time reading about the dark side, and those guys come up from time to time.† â€Å"If we know that, then what are you going to do research on?† â€Å"I'm going to try to find out what sent them.† She patted his shoulder. â€Å"I have to go open the shop. They watched him carefully as he moved her to the breakfast bar, and sat on either side of her high chair as he gave her breakfast. As an experiment, he made an extra piece of toast and tossed it to one of the hounds. It snapped it out of the air and licked its chops once, eyes now locked on Charlie and the loaf of bread. So Charlie toasted four more slices and the hounds alternately snapped each out of the air so swiftly that Charlie wasn't sure he didn't see some sort of vapor from the pressure of their jaws clamping down. â€Å"So, you're hellish beasts from another dimension, and you like toast. Okay.† Then, as Charlie started to toast four more slices, he stopped, feeling stupid. â€Å"You don't really care if it's toasted, do you?† He flipped a slice of bread to the closest of the dogs, who snapped it out of the air. â€Å"Okay, that will speed things up.† Charlie fed them the remainder of the loaf of bread. He spread a few slices with a thick coat of peanut butter, which did nothing whatsoever, then a half dozen more he spread with lemon dishwasher gel, which appeared to have no ill effect except that it made them burp neat, aquamarine-colored bubbles. â€Å"Go walk, Daddy,† Sophie said. â€Å"No walk today, sweetie. I think we'll just stay right here in the apartment and try to figure out our new pals.† Charlie got Sophie out of her chair, wiped the jelly off her face and out of her hair, then sat down with her on the couch to read to her from the Chronicle's classified ads, which was where he plied a large part of his business, other than the Death stuff. But no sooner had he settled into a rhythm than one of the hellhounds came over, took his arm in its mouth, and dragged him into his bedroom, even as he protested, swore, and smacked it in the head with a brass table lamp. The big dog let him go, then stood staring at Charlie's date book like it had been sprayed with beef gravy. â€Å"What?† Charlie said, but then he saw. Somehow, in all the excitement, he hadn't noticed a new name in the book. â€Å"Look, the number is thirty. I have a whole month to find this one. Leave me alone.† Charlie also noticed in passing that engraved on the hellhound's great silver collar was the name ALVIN. â€Å"Alvin?
